Disney and Lucasfilm have announced details of the upcoming “Stars Wars” films at its annual shareholders meeting in San Francisco.
Rian Johnson has also been confirmed to write and direct “Star Wars: Episode VIII,” which will now hit the theaters on May 26, 2017.
Plot:
"Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger has confirmed that Rian Johnson (Looper, The Brothers Bloom) will write and direct “Star Wars: Episode VIII.” The film, which continues the saga after the events of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” is set for release on May 26, 2017 — forty years and a day after the release of “Star Wars: A New Hope” in 1977. Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman are on board to produce, and J.J. Abrams will serve as executive producer."
They have also revealed the first 'Star Wars' standalone film, officially titled Rogue One and confirmed Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) as the lead star. The sci-fi action-adventure will be directed by Gareth Edwards (Godzilla).
'Rogue One' is the first film in a unique series of big-screen adventures that explores the characters and events beyond the core Star Wars saga. The movie starts filming in London this summer and opens Dec. 16, 2016.
