Evan Daugherty has been set to script Tomb Raider, the reboot of the video game property with the fetching heroine, with Warner Bros joining producer Graham King and MGM.
The latter studio has signed on to partner in co-financing and co-producing with MGM. Warner Bros will distribute the film.
Daugherty’s recent work includes Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Divergent, Snow White And The Huntsman and G.I. Joe 3.
The original game was published in 1996 by the London-based video game company Eidos and became one of the most successful video games of the time. The most recent entry in the series was a reboot, telling the origin of Lara Croft. It was released in 2013 and sold over 5 million copies. A follow-up game, titled Rise of the Tomb Raider, is due out later this year as a timed-exclusive for the Xbox One and Xbox 360.
MGM acquired the film rights to the popular videogame in 2013 and partnered with King’s GK Films. King acquired the “Tomb Raider” rights in 2011 from Square Enix and will serve as producer.
Paramount Pictures previously made two movies about the daredevil archaeologist on a series of global missions. The films, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, starred Angelina Jolie and grossed a combined $432 million at the worldwide box office.
