‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Becomes Summer's No. 1 Box-Office Hit

Guardians of the Galaxy beat out three newcomers to win the weekend and in the process became the summer's highest-grossing domestic movie with nearly $252 million.

Marvel's superhero extravaganza took in $17.6 million over the three days to return to No. 1 nearly a month after its opening. “If I Stay,” the teen tearjerker starring Chloe Moretz, opened to $16.5 million and was in a close race for second with “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles,” which has held the top spot for the past two weekends.

The R-rated sequel “Frank Miller‘s Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” bombed spectacularly in its debut, taking in just $6.4 million and winding up in eighth place. The weekend's third wide opener, Sony TriStar's high school football drama “When the Game Stands Tall,” brought in $9 million for fifth, behind Fox's raunchy comedy “Let's Be Cops” at $11 million.

In its fourth weekend, August 22-24, the film took in $17.6 million, placing it at number one once again, becoming the first film in 2014 to top the domestic box office in non-consecutive weeks, as well as passing Transformers: Age of Extinction as the top grossing film of May-August 2014. It is expected to pass Captain America: The Winter Soldier as the top grossing film of 2014 by its fifth weekend. (Courtesy: The Wrap)

As of August 24, 2014, Guardians of the Galaxy has earned $251.9 million in North America and $237.6 million in other countries for a worldwide total of $489.6 million
