    Description:

Sholay is a 1975 action-adventure Hindi film directed by Ramesh Sippy and produced by his father G. P. Sippy. Sholay is considered a classic and one of the best Indian films. It was ranked first in the British Film Institute's 2002 poll of "Top 10 Indian Films" of all time. In 2005, the judges of the 50th annual Filmfare Awards named it the Best Film of 50 Years.

One of the greatest Indian films of all time, Sholay makes a return to the big screen in an incredible 3D avatar. Full of drama, thrills, action & more, this story of vengeance changed Bollywood when it hit theaters on 15th August, 1975. Sholay’s Jai and Veeru played brilliantly by Dharmendra and Amitabh Bachchan became the epitome of friendship, Sanjeev Kumar’s Thakur Sahab became the ultimate revenge seeker, Gabbar played menacingly by Amjad Khan became the most terrifying of villains and Dhanno became the fastest horse ever. And now a whole new generation will get to watch this epic in 3D!

The much-awaited 3D version of epic film Sholay, set to release on January 3 2014, has been made on a budget of approximately Rs 20-22 crores, which includes restoration and conversion, says producer Sascha Sippy. Sascha is the grandson of late filmmaker G P Sippy, who had originally produced Sholay starring Amitabh Bachchan, Dharmendra. It was directed by his son Ramesh Sippy.

"It took two years to make Sholay and three years to restore and convert it into 3D. As far as the budget is concerned, it is close to Rs 20 crores to Rs 22 crores, which also includes the marketing and publicity of the film besides restoration and conversion costs." Sascha added.

The original Sholay was reportedly made on a Rs 4 crores budget.

"We had this idea for a very long time as there is a great respect for the movie and we wanted the new generation to watch it. We started working on it 3 years back. We thought converting it in 3D was a phenomenal idea." Sascha added.

    Plot:

''After Thakur Baldev Singh, (Sanjeev Kumar) a former police officer's family is murdered by a notorious and ruthless bandit "Gabbar Singh" (Amjad Khan), he enlists the services of two outlaws Veeru (Dharmendra) and Jai Dev (Amitabh Bachan) to capture him.''

    Trivia:

Professionalism in 1975: The actors were given a worksheet the previous nights of their shoot, the entire cast followed the schedule meticulously. In spite of the film having a multi starrer cast there were no talks of any misunderstandings. There was a happy and positive atmosphere throughout the filming.

    Budget:
    20-22 crore (INR)

    BoxOffice:

    10 crore - FLOP

Filmmaker Ketan Mehta's company Maya Digital was responsible for converting Sholay into the 3D format. Mehta was approached by G. P. Sippy's grandson, Sasha Sippy about the project in 2010. In March 2012, Shaan Uttam Singh, the grandson of producer G.P. Sippy, said that he would sponsor a conversion of the film to 3D, and release it in late 2012; this was later postponed to late 2013, and eventually finalised for 3 January 2014.
It took INR250 million (US$4.0 million) to convert Sholay to 3D. Under the leadership of computer animator Frank Foster, 350 people worked to convert the film into the digital 3D format, for which every scene had to be individually restored, colour-corrected and re-composited in 3D to match the depth. New set-pieces, particularly those suited to the new format were also included, such as digital logs which scatter in the direction of the camera during the first half of the film when the train collides with them, the gunshot scene which frees Jai and Veeru from their handcuffs, and panoramic views of Gabbar's hideout in the caves.
The theatrical trailer and release date were unveiled by the original script-writers Salim Khan and Javed Akhtar. The two original leads, Bachchan and Dharmendra, were also involved in promoting the re-release. The film was released between 800 and 1,000 screens in India, and additional screens overseas. It earned approximately INR100 million (US$1.6 million) during its re-release, not enough to recover its conversion cost.
